How to Choose the Right Trailer

Pick the right trailer by matching your job, load and tow vehicle.

1) Intended use → Trailer family

  • Cars & motorsport: Auto Cruiser (open aluminium) or Galaxy enclosed for security/weather.

  • Plant & machinery: Heavy-duty flatbed (twin/tri-axle, long ramps).

  • Motorbikes: Single/twin/multi-bike with chocks.

  • General goods/events: Galaxy enclosed

2) Payload capacity

Know the real all-in weight (vehicle/equipment + fluids + tools + accessories). Choose axle count (single/twin/tri) to match payload and stability.

3) Dimensions & access

Measure L × W × H and check door apertures, ramp length/angle, deck height, lashing-point positions (and internal height for enclosed).

4) MAM, towing limits & licence

  • MAM (Maximum Authorised Mass): the legal max loaded weight of the trailer. Find it on the VIN plate/CoC.

  • Payload = Trailer MAM − Unladen weight.

  • GTW/GCW: max legal weight of tow vehicle + trailer together.

  • Braked towing limit: max the vehicle can pull (with trailer brakes).

  • Nose weight: vertical load on towball—must not exceed the lower of towbar or hitch rating.

  • Your licence category must cover the combination.

Quick example:
Tow vehicle braked tow 2,000 kg, GTW 4,500 kg. Trailer MAM 2,700 kg, unladen 700 kg.
Trailer’s actual weight must be ≤ 2,000 kg (vehicle limit), so max trailer payload = 2,000 − 700 = 1,300 kg, and van actual + trailer actual ≤ 4,500 kg.
